To: My Congressional Representatives
As a supporter of the Two Million For Marriage Campaign, I strongly urge you to support efforts to protect the rights of states to define marriage as the union of a husband and wife.
Activist federal judges have issued rulings that threaten to overthrow the marriage laws of 45 states, stripping millions of Americans of their civil right to vote for marriage. A federal judge in San Francisco has already struck down Proposition 8, invalidating the will of 7 million California voters. A federal judge in Boston is attempting to strike down federal marriage law (the Defense of Marriage Act) as well.
Voters in 31 states have decided that marriage should remain the unions of one man and one woman. Legislatures in 14 other states have done the same thing. The laws in all those states are now at risk because of the decision of these activist federal judges.
Like the vast majority of Americans, I believe marriage is the union of a husband and a wife. I do not want activist judges to take away our right to define marriage . . . or to redefine marriage so that schoolchildren are taught that their parents are bigots. Please support whatever action is needed, including a constitutional amendment if the courts are determined to force the issue, to ensure that the rights of American voters are respected, and that marriage remains the union of one man and one woman.
